What Is Balloon Sinus Dilation?Call Us! (901) 861-2526

Historically, sinusitis patients have been treated with medications, and most get better. However, when medication fails, sinus surgery is often the best option. Conventional sinus surgery requires general anesthesia and the removal of bone and tissue to open blocked passageways. Instead of conventional surgery, approximately 900,000 patients a year elect to live with painful sinus conditions. Now there is an alternative solution with the balloon sinus dilation technology.

Balloon sinus dilation allows the physician to use a small balloon to open blocked sinus openings. This is similar to the cardiology procedure of angioplasty where a balloon opens blocked heart arteries. It is designed to be permanent and reduce the chronic symptoms of sinus sufferers. At Memphis Sinus Relief Center, two systems are used: Balloon Sinuplasty by Acclarent and NuVent sinus dilation by Medtronic. Both procedures use balloons to open the blocked sinuses, but they differ in their guidance systems. Both are clinically effective technologies.

Balloon Sinuplasty™

Illustration of Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

Balloon Sinuplasty™ is a minimally invasive technology for treating chronic sinus inflammation. Due to the minimally invasive nature of this technology, this treatment is now available in the office. It uses a small catheter and balloon to quickly open and expand blocked sinuses.

Balloon Sinuplasty™ has been used in over 300,000 patients, and over 14,000 patients have had the procedure performed in-office. Each day more than 200 sinus procedures are done with this technology. This FDA cleared technology uses a small, flexible balloon catheter to open blocked sinus passages, restoring normal sinus drainage.

The FDA has cleared the device for Balloon Sinuplasty™, and there has been additional support by two Ear, Nose, and Throat organizations. Both the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society have released policy statements affirming the use of balloon dilation in the treatment of sinusitis.

NuVent™ Balloon Sinus Dilation System

Newer on the scene is the Medtronic™ NuVent™ technology. It uses the Fusion navigation system which syncs the doctor's instruments and the patient's CT scan. This technology can be used in surgery or in the office, but it is particularly effective with sinus balloon dilation in the office. It functions like a 3-D Global Positioning System, providing real-time images for precise sinus intervention. Since each patient is unique, this system shows your doctor a map of your specific anatomy. This allows the sinus dilation balloon to be placed in the blocked sinus opening with great precision using the image guidance system. Its function is to increase safety and accuracy in difficult (and even routine) cases.

“The NuVent™ balloon sinus dilation procedure is a true advance in sinus care. The procedure is less invasive and as a result offers less discomfort and quicker recovery times than traditional sinus surgery.” – Jan H. Petri, MD

Advantages Over Traditional Surgery

  • Minimally invasive
  • Local anesthesia, done in the office
  • Conservative approach
  • Covered by Medicare and most major insurers
  • Quick recovery
  • Often less expensive for patients

Will Balloon Sinus Dilation Help Me?

Only a physician can determine if Balloon Sinuplasty™ or NuVent™ balloon dilation is right for you. If you have had prior treatment by another physician, it is helpful to know what medications you have taken and what treatment you have received. A list of prescribed medications can be obtained from your pharmacy, and your medical records can be obtained from your physician. It is helpful to have this information at your Memphis Sinus Relief appointment. If you have not been treated previously, you can still make an appointment and we can begin your evaluation.
